NVIDIA Planning More from the G92

After the success of the new GeForce 8800 GT, it looks like NVIDIA could have another card based on the same G92 core planned for later this year. Dubbed the new 8800 GTS (yes, I know it's confusing - hopefully that will change) the new G92 card will feature 128 shader units instead of the 112 on the 8800 GT, which would suggest they could well exist on current 8800 GT cards and have been disabled for marketing or yield purposes. As it features a 256-bit memory interface it will go back to the more common 512MB and 1024MB memory blocks, and given how impressively the 8800 GT performs it's expected it may be able to surpass NVIDIA's 8800 GTX and possibly even the Ultra - NVIDIA's two best cards. The card is expected to launch just after AMD's Radeon HD 3800, and could well spoil the show for AMD if it performs as well as the speculation suggests.

Other changes also include the ability to transfer pictures directly from Gmail to Google's Picasa service, in an attempt to reduce bandwidth and processing expenses for the client. Gmail 2.0 is expected to be launched either this year or early next year, and will be available via a "new version" option which will appear in the upper right of the mail screen.

Crysis Is Officially Gold; Coming to PCs on November 16th

It's hard to find a computer game with more hype than Crysis. And so, it should come as no surprise that Electronic Arts' Crysis recently went gold. "We are extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish with Crysis," said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "We wanted to push the boundaries both visually and with open-ended, non-linear gameplay and we believe the end result delivers that vision." At this point, Crytek and EA are planning to release their masterpiece on November 16th.

Walgreens to Offer Movie-Burning Kiosks Next Year

Thanks to some new, more lenient legislature on copy protection, retailers around America can do more liberal things with digital content. The Walgreens convenience store and pharmacy is looking to beat rival CVS by being the first to offer DVD-burning kiosks. In one sense, it adds convenience. By burning your own movies legally, you save a buck or two. However, it also allows old movie makers to put their content on said kiosks. Since most old black-and-white films, independent films, and b-grade horror films are not nearly popular enough to deem mass-manufacturing feasible or profitable, this new method of distributing said movies would possibly curb piracy, give old movie-makers fresh profits and popularity, and get classic movies to the consumer. Walgreens hopes to have the first movie-burning kiosks operational next month.

IBM Pioneers Process to Turn Waste into Solar Energy

IBM today announced an innovative new semiconductor wafer reclamation process pioneered at its Burlington, Vermont manufacturing facility. The new process uses a specialized pattern removal technique to repurpose scrap semiconductor wafers -- thin discs of silicon material used to imprint patterns that make finished semiconductor chips for computers, mobile phones, video games, and other consumer electronics -- to a form used to manufacture silicon-based solar panels. The new process was recently awarded the "2007 Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Award" from The National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR).

Uruguay Orders First Official Batch of $100 OLPCs

While countries such as Nigeria have been experimenting with the OLPC in the classroom, Uruguay is the first country confident enough in the OLPC to place an official order. The South American country of Uruguay recently placed an order for 100,000 OLPCs, to be deployed in classrooms for 6-12 year old schoolchildren. An additional 300,000 OLPCs may be ordered by Uruguay to truly achieve "one laptop per child" by 2009. The founder of the OLPC project is "delighted" by their first official order.
We commend Uruguay for being the first country to take concrete actions to provide laptops to all its children and teachers and look forward to other countries following this example

Toshiba's $200 HD-DVD Players Spread to Circuit City

New PS3s Shipping with 65nm Chips

Sony has rather quietly decided to introduce a new 65nm version of the Cell processor into its new 40GB PlayStation 3 models, which has helped to significantly reduce the console's power consumption. With the older models, the machine would require 200W when running, whilst the new model only uses 135W. Not only does it mean reduced power consumption, but the new 65nm Cell should hopefully allow the console to run cooler and quieter. Sony has also altered the 40GB version to include a smaller heat pipe, a new motherboard version and added a battery so the console keeps time when disconnected from the mains.

Seagate to Close N. Ireland Plant

Seagate Technology, the world's largest maker of hard drives, said Monday it is shuttering one of two manufacturing facilities in Northern Ireland, resulting in a cut of 780 employees, about 1.5 percent of the company's global work force. The company is closing a 10-year-old plant in Limavady in County Derry that manufactures substrate materials used in disks for hard drives, Seagate spokesman Woody Monroy said. Monroy did not know how much money the company would save from the move but said it is part of Seagate's ongoing effort to streamline operations. "It's no longer competitive from a business standpoint" to keep the Limavady plant open, Monroy said.

Capcom and Sony Pictures co-producing Animated Resident Evil Film

Game publisher Capcom and movie maker Sony Pictures Entertainment have teamed up to produce three live-action films based on the Resident Evil games, each more successful than the last at the US box office. The pair today announced that they are teaming up once again, this time on a full-length, computer-animated Resident Evil feature. The film will be titled Biohazard: Degeneration (Biohazard is the Japanese name of the Resident Evil series), and will introduce a new storyline within the series' universe. Beyond that, the only detail released about the feature is that it will be released next year. The companies didn't specify if that release will be theatrical or straight-to-DVD, although game-based CG films have taken both routes in the past. Capcom has a number of film projects currently in the works. The company is collaborating with Hyde Park Entertainment on a new Street Fighter movie featuring Chun Li as the central character. The film rights to Onimusha and Devil May Cry have also been sold by the company.

Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition Hits 510MHz FSB on AMD RD790 on Air

Regardless of theoretical performance, the upcoming AMD RD790 and Athlon 64 Black Edition line of processors certainly are overclockable and feature-laden. On nothing but air cooling, MSI testers were able to get an RD790 chipset to a remarkable 510MHz FSB speed. Once the RD790 is released with PCI Express 2, CrossFire X, and support for goodies such as Phenom, we will see one seriously good platform.

New Hacking Tool Uses Power of Graphics Cards

When Folding@Home came out with a GPU client, folding scores soared, due to the massive power just waiting to be unlocked in a graphics card. However, as said in Spider-man, with great power comes great responsibility. Someone has reverse-engineered the power of graphics, and is trying to patent the use of this power to crack passwords at incredible rates.
The toughest passwords, including those used to log in to a Windows Vista computer, would normally take months of continuous computer processing time to crack using a computer's central processing unit (CPU). By harnessing a $150 GPU - less powerful than the nVidia 8800 card - Elcomsoft says they can cracked in just three to five days. Less complex passwords can be retrieved in minutes, rather than hours or days
Such technology could be used by crime investigators to log into terrorist networks, or pirates to get into RIAA servers.

Michael Bay Supports Blu-Ray Again; Dumps HD-DVD

Transformers director Michael Bay is "feeling Blu". The main reason is because he feels that his decision to release Transformers exclusively on HD-DVD was "short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD. As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out."

Regardless of where Michael Bay's money is, Paramount already announced incredible sales of the Transformers movie, on both HD-DVD and DVD.

Apple Acknowledges Some Leopard Installation Problems

Apple posted a support document on its Web site addressing reports of interminable "blue screen" problems that caused some Mac users upgrading to Mac OS X Leopard no small degree of frustration. Apple said the problem could be related to "application enhancement software" that does not work with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Apple recommended two solutions for Leopard owners attempting to upgrade: novice users should reinstall Leopard using the "Archive and Install" method detailed here. Other solution involves using the command line to get rid of the application enhancement software.

Specifically developed to answer enthusiast gamers' demand for high-performing graphics at the $199 to $259 price point, GeForce 8800 GT offers a hyper-reactive, intensely robust gaming experience for the latest next-generation DirectX 10 games, such as Crysis, Hellgate: London, and Gears of War, as well as full support for current DirectX 9 games.

Court Convicts Man of Selling and Possessing Mod Chips

Apparently, creating, owning, and selling computer chips that modify gaming consoles is very illegal in Britain. A certain Neil Stanley Higgs, who goes by "Mr. Modchips", was found guilty of 26 offenses of "advertising, possessing, supplying, and selling mod chips." The chips Mr.Modchips was selling themselves seem harmless enough, all they do is allow someone to remotely activate or disable a console. Mr. Modchips was found by the court to have made selling the modchips a very lucrative venture, and had made over £1,000,000 just from selling them. Mr.Modchips plans to appeal the decision.

AMD Confirms RV670 Launch Date: November 19th

As predicted by analysts earlier, AMD will indeed be releasing the RV670 graphics chips on November 19th. However, even now, the market branding of the card remains unknown. While some say it will be the HD 2950 series, others say it will be the HD 3800. Regardless of what it will be called, AMD will be releasing two versions. The first, codenamed "Gladiator" will run at a core clock of 825MHz, and have an undetermined quantity of 2.4GHz GDDR4 memory. "Revival" will run at a core clock of 750MHz, have the same GDDR4 memory, but will be clocked at 1.8GHz.

America Extends Tax Moratorium by Seven More Years

American citizens can be glad in the fact that once again, the government will not be charging them for the privilege of using the internet. American internet customers have not been taxed for their internet use since 1998, and the moratorium has been renewed in 2001 and 2004. The senate is considering a permanent tax moratorium on the internet, due to strong opposition from Internet Service Providers on an internet tax.

Wal-Mart Stocks $200 HD-DVD Players

While Blu-Ray may be getting more sales as of late, HD-DVD proprietors have a figurative ace-in-the-hole. They know that regardless of how good a product is, nobody's going to get it if it is not reasonably priced. And so, they are trying to get an HD-DVD player into customers' homes by offering players at $200 at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is currently stocking said HD-DVD players, and will formally begin selling them on November 3rd.

Leaked AMD Documents Show New DX10.1 Feature; RV670 Superiority

While the NVIDIA 8800GT may be getting a lot of press, AMD refuses to let itself be forgotten about. Leaked documents show that the RV670 (HD 3800 series) will be well worth the wait for it. While people hear that the RV670 will be PCI Express 2 and DX10.1 compatible, have Unified Video Decoder (UVD), and be 55nm, this doesn't really amount to much if people have no idea what the benefits are from any of that. And so, this leaked document shows one of the many goodies waiting for potential RV670 customers, via a "global illumination" demo. The image on the left is rendered with DX10.1, and the one on the right is rendered with DX10.0. Vista SP1 will be built on the DirectX10.1 architecture.

ASUS Prices EeePC; Will Release EeePC November 1st

The ASUS EeePC is getting a good share of press. It will the the first UMPC that will be offered at a reasonably low cost, unlike other industry contenders, which can cost $1000USD or more. On November 1st, America will start seeing ASUS EeePC models on store shelves, and ASUS finally confirmed prices, specifications, and release dates on the high-end $400 model. The other two models are $350USD and $300USD, respectively, and ASUS has yet to announce the specifications of those.

Gamestop Stops Offering Xbox360 Replacement Plan

In most cases, selling extended warranties on products that probably aren't going to die anyways has been an enormous profit-maker for retailers worldwide. However, the Xbox360 has unfortunately done the exact opposite. For whatever reason, the Xbox360 is notorious for failing. And so, to curb the deficit that the Xbox360 is causing Gamestop, Gamestop is no longer offering extended warranties on the Xbox360, instead relying on Microsoft to do that.

Microsoft earlier this year announced plans to re-design the Xbox360, in an effort to reduce alarming failure rates.

NVIDIA - SLI Doesn't Work in Crysis

Crysis hasn't been out for more two days and a number of people have already found out that SLI technology doesn't yet work on the new DirectX10 game title. Granted, Crysis is only in beta, but it would still be nice to see SLI supported from the start. NVIDIA made a statement today that the final Crysis game will support SLI via a patch.
Although SLI is not supported in the demo, the final Crysis game with a patch will provide full SLI support.

Users can pick almost any motherboard with any socket, fit it with two Diamond Radeon cards and run CrossFire on it using Diamond's xDNA technology.

Some Leopard Upgraders See BSOD

A significant number of Mac owners upgrading to Leopard on Friday reported that after installing the new operating system, their machines locked up, showing only an interminable - and very Windows-like - "blue screen of death."
I'm upgrading my 20" iMac (Core Duo) at the moment and the installation 'completed', then the computer rebooted and it has been sitting on a plain blue screen for the past 30 minutes.

There is no progress indicator of any sort but I can occasionally hear the hard drive seeking.
explains thread posted on Apple forums. Many other Apple users complain from the same issue. Some reports speculate that the glitch might be related to a third-party program that installs a base-level framework that modifies OS X. Unfortunately, Apple was not available to comment on the story. Continue reading the full thread - Installation appears stuck on a plain blue screen.

Microsoft Getting Closer to OLPC Operating System

Software giant Microsoft is making progress in creating a modified version of its Windows operating system designed to run on the XO laptop built by the One Laptop Per Child project. Microsoft Corporate Vice President Will Poole said:
We're spending a nontrivial amount of money on it. We remain hopeful with our progress to date, we still have significant work ahead to finalize our analysis and testing processes. At the end of the day, there's no guarantees.
The OLPC project intends to start producing its laptop next month, which is designed for elementary school children in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The laptops were originally designed to run Linux, however Microsoft hopes to develop a cut-down version of Windows in order to install it on the XO, with the biggest issues being reducing the power consumption and the space required by the operating system in order for it to run efficiently.

OS X Leopard Hacked for Intel PCs

Just one day after its release, Apple's new OS X Leopard has already been hacked to work on standard Intel-based computers. Admittedly it isn't guaranteed to work 100% yet, and is more than likely illegal in some way, but all you need to give it a try is a patched DVD image, a zip file with a patch and a USB flash drive. After that you're just three easy steps away from running the new operating system on your Intel PC (SSE3 and later) but unfortunately there's no AMD support available yet. As many PC owners have a slight dislike for Macs this may not be too appealing to everyone, but you can take a look at the procedure here.

CoolIT Systems Extends its Liquid Cooling Technology to the Workstation/Server Market

CoolIT Systems announced the new Workstation Cooler, a CPU liquid cooling device utilizing CoolIT's patented, award-winning MTEC technology. With this device, small/medium businesses, video production/pro audio studios, game developers, government offices, and churches can maximize the performance from their workstation PC. Because workstations and servers typically require power-intensive software applications, the CPU and other internal computing hardware are placed under a heavy load which can in some cases, cause the entire system to overheat or fail.

BitTorrent Site Promises to Bring Back OiNK

The Pirate Bay said Friday that it was working on bringing back OiNK, a BitTorrent tracker that featured music files from "hundreds of thousands" of music albums. OiNK was taken down on October 23 by police in the Netherlands and Britain in conjunction with the IFPI and BPI, and a message on the site's front page indicates that an investigation was ongoing into the "identities and activities" of its users. However, the BitTorrent community has chosen to fight back, opening another site called BOiNK which is expected to be live within the next several days. The original owners of OiNK are not involved, nor are any other BitTorrent sites.
The most important thing about BOiNK is perhaps the message it sends out to the IFPI and the BPI: It shows that that if you stop one tracker, others will pop up days after,
Ernesto wrote for TorrentFreak. Read the full story here.

AMD Black Edition CPU May Not Help AMD-based Motherboard Demand

Although AMD has launched the Black Edition Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPU with an unlocked multiplier, some motherboard makers are taking a conservative view over whether the CPU will help win back market share. Although it is available for about $130, motherboard makers have no plans to adjust their current shipment proportions since they do not think the Black Edition CPUs will lead to any increase in demand for AMD motherboards. Currently, motherboard makers are putting their hopes on AMD's next-generation Phenom processors, but even so, they are not expecting to see any real boost in demand for a couple of months. AMD will launch the first Phenom-based CPUs on November 20th this year.

Apple Limits iPhone to Two Per Customer

Apple has begun limiting sales of its popular iPhone to two per customer and no longer accepts cash for payment.
We're requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers,
said Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris, calling the demand for the iPhone "off the charts." The previous limit was five iPhones per person, which tempted hackers to buy in quantity to resell or unlock them from their intended use with AT&T Mobility. This precaution is intended to lower the sale rate of phones, bought to be unlocked. The new restrictions are also aimed at ensuring enough iPhones for increased holiday sales. The iPhone will soon launch in Germany, the United Kingdom and France.

New PS3 Firmware Brings Back Rumble... Almost

With the release of Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction DualShock is finally returning to the PlayStation family following Sony's legal disputes with Immersion. Although the firmware is not available for download yet (it's only included with the Ratchet and Clank game at present) version 1.94 gives games the ability to a vibration signal to controllers. The downside is that the DualShock 3 controller won't actually be available until next spring, so gamers will still have a fair wait, although the new hardware should be released in Japan during November if you'd like to import one. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed are also set to feature rumble before the DualShock 3 controllers are released, and current games like Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm should receive downloadable patches to enable rumble.

"This fiscal year is off to an outstanding start with the fastest revenue growth of any first quarter since 1999," said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. "Operating income growth of over 30% also reflects our ability to translate revenue into profits while making strategic investments for the future."

Crysis Demo Publicly Available Later Today

Anyone who has been unsuccessful in getting the Crysis demo using FilePlanet should be glad to hear that the demo will be publicly available to everyone in just over 12 hours (12 hours and 47 minutes as I write this). An in-official site which is counting down to the launch can be found here, although the servers will probably struggle to cope with demand at first given that Crysis is one of the most anticipated games so far this year, so it may be worth waiting for a few external sites to start hosting the demo. Anyone who has already ordered Crysis via EA should be able to download the demo already via EA's downloader.

Update: Unfortunately EA has decided to delay the public release by an extra day, so it's now going to be released tomorrow. Sorry for the disappointment, from a quick look it seems the delay could be linked to issues with the 24 hour exclusive for customers purchasing Crysis via the EA Store.

Microsoft Patch Slows Computers to a Crawl

Microsoft's automatic updates system has once again found itself in the limelight following an issue with Windows Desktop Search 3.01 which has slowed thousands of computers and is causing havoc for IT technicians around the world. Despite client computers being configured only to update currently installed software, numerous blogs have reported that the Desktop Search software is installing itself and then hogging resources by loading an indexer, resulting in client computers slowing to a crawl and file servers struggling with the increased load. A Microsoft spokeswoman says the company is looking into reports, but IT administrators won't be too impressed with Windows Update at the moment as this comes just weeks after news that the update services secretly downloads and installs updates even on computers with automatic update disabled.

SanDisk Suing 25 Companies for Patent Infringement

SanDisk, a company well known for developing and manufacturing flash-based storage solutions, is suing 25 companies including LG Electronics for allegedly infringing patents used in removable flash storage products such as MP3 players and USB flash drives. The company has filed two lawsuits, one for five patent infringements and the other for two patent infringements, as well as filing a complaint with the US International Trade Commission asking to have the companies being accused barred from exporting their products to the USA. Other companies involved include Buffalo, Apacer Technology and Kingston, and if the case is successful it could see a rise in the price of flash-based storage such as CompactFlash cards.

Hitachi to Stop Shipping Home PCs

Technology giant Hitachi has announced that it plans to stop selling personal computers to the public, instead choosing to concentrate on other areas such as computers specifically for the broadcasting industry. It will continue to manufacture and sell business computers and will still offer support to any customers who own Hitachi PCs, with the models launched this summer to be the last available on the market. Hitachi has struggled to compete with firms such as Dell and HP, shipping just 134,000 home-use PCs in Japan during the fiscal year leading up to March 2007. Hitachi may also consider selling its hard drive unit soon following losses every year since the company bought the business from IBM for $2 billion in 2002.

In the last three years total earnings of Transmeta were $150.725 million. The agreement also provides for the parties to dismiss their pending patent litigation with prejudice and for a mutual general release of all claims of any type between the parties.

The site had an estimated membership of 180,000. People were only invited to become members if they could prove they had music to offer and had to keep posting tracks to maintain their membership. It is alleged the site was operated by a 24-year-old man who lived near Middlesbrough in north-east England. He was arrested Tuesday. The site's servers, based in Amsterdam, were seized in raids last week.

Microsoft's most recent Security Intelligence Report, a comprehensive analysis of the threat landscape, shows that attackers are increasingly targeting personal information to make a profit and are threatening to impact people's privacy. The report found that during the first half of 2007, 31.6 million phishing scams were detected, an increase of more than 150 percent over the previous six months. The study also shows a 500 percent increase in trojan downloaders and droppers, malicious code used to install files such as trojans, password stealers, keyboard loggers and other malware on users' systems.

VVIKOO GeForce 8600 GT Turbo Review

VVIKOO GeForce 8600 GT Turbo Review

VVIKOO is a new videocard manufacturer based in Paris offering both NVIDIA and ATI cards. One of their first products is the GeForce 8600 GT Turbo, which is an overclocked version of NVIDIA's 8600 GT. The card comes equipped with a quiet Zalman cooler and offers great overclocking potential. In our testing we could increase the clocks by more than 40% over NVIDIA's reference clocks.

F.T.C. Chief Balks at Intel Inquiry

The head of the Federal Trade Commission has rejected requests by lawmakers, other commissioners and a small rival company to open a formal antitrust investigation of Intel, the world's largest maker of computer microprocessors, for anticompetitive conduct, government officials and lawyers involved in the proceeding said. In recent weeks, regulators in Korea and with the European Commission have separately accused Intel of antitrust violations by offering large discounts to computer makers in exchange for their not using products by the rival company, Advanced Micro Devices, which has struggled to compete and has waged a global antitrust campaign against Intel. Japanese officials made similar accusations in 2005. The trade commission has been conducting an informal review of A.M.D.'s complaints for more than a year, gathering thousands of documents from Intel and its customers. But the commission's chairwoman, Deborah P. Majoras, has rejected requests to elevate the inquiry to a formal investigation, which would give staff members the authority to issue subpoenas and compel testimony from executives of the companies involved.

Intel Previews Integrated DirectX10 Solution; Claims 3x 3Dmark06 Performance

Intel is showing off what will soon replace today's GMA3100 and GMA X3500 integrated graphics solutions: the GMA X4500. The X4500 will be built into the G45 chipsets, part of the "Eaglelake" family. The X4500 will also support DirectX10.0 and SM4.0, making it a prime candidate to run 3DMark Next when it is released. Until then, Intel claims that the X4500 will run roughly three times faster than the previous GMA3100 graphics solution. Motherboards with G45 chips in them will also support DisplayPort, HDMI, hardware-level HDCP decoding, and DVI. Lastly, the X4500 will support a new version of Intel Clear Video, which should enhance HD-DVD and Blu-ray playback on a PC considerably. Expect to see the G45, as well as the rest of the Eaglelake family, in Q2 2008.

Microsoft to Create Special Version of Windows Vista for ASUS EeePC

When Microsoft discovered that the ASUS EeePC would come with Linux as the standard operating system, Microsoft was "astounded". And so, Microsoft is working hard to create a special version of Windows Vista that's small enough to run on an ASUS EeePC. This is much better (and cheaper) than alternative ways to get Windows on an EeePC. ASUS revealed earlier that with a little bit of tweaking, it is possible to get a retail copy of Windows XP working on the small 2-8GB SSD drive, and still have enough space for applications, and posted Windows XP drivers on their website in response. Neither ASUS or Microsoft have any comment as to when we can see this special version of Vista on the laptop, or how much it will cost.

Microsoft to Cut Xbox360 Price in Japan

In July, representatives for Microsoft claimed that their Xbox360 prices in Japan were competitive enough, and did not need to lower them. However, Sony's recent announcement to cut both the 20GB and 60GB PS3, as well as the upcoming release of the 40GB PS3, caused Microsoft to re-think their position. To remain competitive, as of November 1st, the Japanese Xbox360 core will cost ¥27,800 (£120/€172/$244), and the Japanese Xbox360 Premium will cost ¥34,800 (£150/€215/$306).

82% of American IPhone Customers are 'Very Satisfied'

Despite all the bad press the iPhone has been getting in response to such allegations as locking people to a certain network and preventing third party applications from going on the iPhone, 82% of all people who've ever bought an iPhone are reported as being "very satisfied". The iPhone also makes up two percent of all phones on the street today, and 16% of all phone customers who plan on buying a new phone within the next six months are planning on getting an iPhone.

Requirements for Next Version of 3DMark Confirmed

The 3DMark series is one of the most popular set of benchmarking tools in the world of computer enthusiasts. 3DMark Next, or so it will be called, is the official successor to 3DMark06. Unfortunately for a lot of enthusiasts, 3DMark Next will be Windows Vista and SM4 exclusive, which will almost certainly speed up the adoption of both on enthusiast computers. And now, without further ado, the system requirements (and the recommended system requirements).

Yahoo! Chief Marketing Officer Latest Exec to Leave

Yahoo Inc confirmed on Friday that Chief Marketing Officer Cammie Dunaway, a member of the Internet media company's executive team, was leaving the company, effective November 2. As part of a series of restructuring moves over the past year, nearly half of the 15-member top executive team at Yahoo have either taken new roles or left the company. Co-founder Jerry Yang took over as chief executive of Yahoo in June. Dunaway was in charge of global brand marketing efforts for the company. Among the campaigns she organized was Yahoo's 2004 "Life Engine" corporate advertising campaign. She was named as one of the 100 Top Marketers by U.S. trade magazine Advertising Age. "Cammie has strengthened the marketing function and built a strong bench of creative talent," Yahoo said in a statement. "We wish her all the best in her future endeavors and thank her for her leadership." Yahoo did not give further details on her departure.

TV-Links Pirate Website Shut Down

One of the world's most-used pirate film websites TV-Links has been closed after providing links to illegal versions of major Hollywood hits and TV shows. The first closure of a major UK-based pirate site was also accompanied by raids and an arrest, the anti-piracy group Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) said today. A 26-year-old man from Cheltenham was arrested on Thursday in connection with offences relating to the facilitation of copyright infringement on the internet, FACT said. Fanatec Headshot Controller Review

Fanatec Headshot Controller Review

The Fanatec Headshot Controller is a mouse and mousepad combination from German manufacturer Fanatec. Usually such a combo is a low quality product, but not in this case. We were surprised by the excellent build quality which is on par, if not better, with big names like Logitech and Microsoft. Also the mousepad has an incredibly smooth surface with almost no friction.

The title says it all. ATI Radeon HD 3870, the one on the second picture will feature 825MHz core and 2400MHz memory clocks, DirectX 10.1 support, and PCI-e 2.0 technology. ATI Radeon HD 2850 on the third picture will be clocked at 700MHz/1800MHz core/memory with DirectX 10.1 support and PCI-e 2.0. Microsoft and Toshiba May Create HD-DVD Xbox360

Microsoft recently aspired to steal some of the Nintendo Wii's thunder by creating a low cost counterpart of their console with the Xbox 360 Arcade, and Sony quickly followed suit with the 40GB PS3. However, Microsoft may be working on another version of the Xbox360: one with an HD-DVD player built in. If this is true, and Microsoft does release an HD-DVD Xbox360, then Toshiba will officially be getting paid by two console manufacturers: Sony will pay Toshiba for the Cell, and Microsoft will pay for the HD-DVD player. This rumored HD-DVD Xbox360 may also bring new features to the table, such as a larger hard drive, an HDTV tuner, and a "port for MP3 players".

AMD to Produce Hundreds of Thousands of Quad Core Processors to Meet Demand

AMD recently admitted that it was not quite prepared when they launched quad-core processors earlier this year. Even after the delays, there simply were not enough AMD quad core offerings to go around. And so, to make up for that, they've announced that they're going to make a lot more quad core processors this quarter. The official statement by AMD:
While our initial production ramp of quad-core Opterons has been slower than anticipated, we expect quad-core Opteron will be widely available by the middle of this quarter; and, we expect to ship hundreds of thousands of quad-core processors this quarter into the server and desktop segments.

Comcast Actively Interferes With File Sharing Services

Comcast, one of the largest providers of cable television and internet in America, decided recently that they were fed up with the huge amount of file sharing traffic on their network, which was beginning to affect the speed of other users connections. And so, they've snuck a little code into their cable internet services. Subscribers of Comcast can download all the BitTorrent/P2P content that they desire without a problem. However, when they in turn try to upload it to other BitTorrent/P2P users, Comcast forbids the file transfer from completing. Whether this is done via hardware or software is unclear. Regardless, this certainly puts a damper on file sharing. While this does stop potential pirates in their tracks, an independent film maker or artist hoping to share their content via BitTorrent will have to find a different service provider to share their content on.

Electronic Arts Pushing for Single Open Platform for Games

When a gamer is shopping for the proper device to game upon, they get a huge headache. There are no less than four different choices (PC, Xbox360, PS3, Wii), and all of them have their individual set of games at different price points that perform differently. Electronic Arts is getting very tired of coding it's games four times over, and wants there to be one open platform to ease the headaches of both consumer and developer. Unfortunately for EA and gamers, console manufacturers would not get very much profit if they all just surrendered their proprietary stuff and made one big happy open-source console. Analysts predict that if game consoles do fade out in the near future, they will be replaced by terminal servers, so that users can simply plug in with a set-top box.

New Zealand Brewery Offers Lifetime Supply of Beer for Safe Return of Laptop

When someone loses something valuable or close to them, chances are they will pay handsomely to hold what is dear to them again. This is clearly the case in New Zealand, where a brewery is offering a lifetime supply of beer (a 12 pack a month) to whoever returns their laptop to them. The computer owned by the Croucher Brewing Company, in the central North Island city of Rotorua, contains very important designs, contact details and financial information. The company is offering smaller quantities of beer to anyone with clues leading up to the laptop.

DRam Makers Battered by Falling Prices

DRam memory chips makers are facing growing losses as prices fall, analysts in Asia have warned. Cut-throat competition has made it increasingly difficult for the manufacturers to turn a profit this year, and the situation is worsening. Prices of 512Mb DDR2 memory chips slumped to a new low of $1.02 this week, according to memory market research firm DRam Exchange.
The DRam spot price has fallen to $1, and makers such as Powerchip, ProMos and Nanya Technology are facing losses of $100m monthly,
said analysts from Taiwan's MasterLink Securities in a briefing for investors in Taiwan's stock market today. The manufacturers are all medium-sized Taiwan-based chip makers, but companies elsewhere in the world are also expected to suffer serious losses. Continue reading the full report here.

Halo 3/BioShock Sales Push Xbox360 Sales Ahead of Wii

For a while, the Nintendo Wii was truly the king of consoles. It had all sorts of fun games, it was easy to use, and it was cheap as dirt (relatively speaking). However, with the release of such extremely well done games as BioShock and Halo 3 to the Xbox360, many gamers are picking up an Xbox 360 just to play said games. In fact, just last month, Xbox 360 sales effectively doubled, according to recent NPD figures. Overall, Microsoft sold 527,800 Xbox360s, Nintendo sold 501,000 Wiis, and Sony sold 119,400 PS3s.

Record Labels Replacing CD Single Albums for USB Sticks

Well, according to some analysts, the CD simply isn't cool anymore among 12-24 year olds, the demographic most record labels target. And so, they're trying to make it 'cool' by replacing the 'square' CD with a much sleeker USB stick. The USB stick would include songs, videos, and some multimedia content from the artist. Keane and The Pussycat Dolls will be the pioneers in USB stick single albums, with their latest stuff coming out before Halloween on the USB stick. While USB sticks may be smaller and sleeker than CDs, they don't appear to be much cheaper. The average USB single album would cost about £5 (€7/$10) per stick, about £2 more than the CD single album. The fact that most car radios do not have a USB slot may also restrict adoption of the new media format.

Halo 3 Blamed for Poor Movie Attendance

Most movies that come out in America target a very slim demographic: the 18-34 year old male. However, Hollywood is facing one of the weakest box office performances on record. Instead of looking at the movies in circulation or in production, they are very quick to blame Halo 3, which also targets the 18-34 year old male demographic. "The Heartbreak Kid" is a fine example of this, according to Hollywood. Initial estimates hoped that this movie would make $25 million on the opening weekend, but in reality, it hardly made over $14 million. This is absolutely paltry compared to Halo 3 sales, which were $300 million in the first week. While "The Heartbreak Kid" may have gotten relatively mediocre ratings, Hollywood would much rather blame the extreme success of Halo 3 than look inwards and wonder whether or not people really want to see movies like "The Heartbreak Kid".

Best Buy Stops Selling Analog Televisions in Response to New Broadcasting Regulations

For those of you that still subscribe to analog television services, and still use old-fashioned "analog" televisions, you finally have a legitimate excuse to go to your local electronics store and splurge: by February 19th, 2009, all analog broadcasts to consumer televisions will be prohibited in America. All broadcasts from then on will be all digital. Consumers with analog televisions can approach this two ways. They can buy a digital-to-analog converter box, which should cost about $70. Or, the consumer can buy a brand new HDTV. Best Buy is hoping that consumers will do the latter. To help sway consumers in favor of dropping large amounts of cash to a brand new television, and to make sure that their new television customers will be satisfied for years to come, they've stopped selling analog televisions altogether.
Customers can now be sure that any television they purchase at Best Buy will be fully compliant with the digital television transition. And for customers who aren't in the market for a new television, we can help you find the best solution to meet your needs

Western Union has already tested this across America, and hopes to bring it to the public in Q2 2008. To make sure that there are no Nigerians trying to get you to cash fake checks, Western Union made it so that no transaction can happen without connecting the user "to a company operator to complete the transaction".

British Government Places Ads in Tom Clancy Games.

British intelligence agencies are to offer video gamers hooked on espionage-inspired adventures the chance to live out their fantasies. Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the surveillance arm of the intelligence services, will this month become the first spy agency to embed adverts for new recruits inside computer games. The advertisements will appear as billboards in the fictional landscapes of games including Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent. They will not be written into the games themselves but will be fed into games when they are played on personal computers and Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles that are connected to the internet. A spokesperson for GCHQ described the potential recruits that it wanted to reach as "computer-savvy, technologically able, quick thinking. "We find increasingly we have to use less conventional means of attracting people . . . to go beyond glossy brochures and milk-round stalls."

Intel to Phase Out Single Core Processors

Intel took on the mindset of "out with the old and in with the new", and their choice is reflected in their roadmaps. Starting in Q1 2008, Intel will remove their single-core offerings from the market by replacing them with superior dual-core models. The upcoming Celeron E1000 series will be the first entry-level dual-core processor to hit the market. The first dual-core Celeron, the E1200, is clocked at 1.6GHz, has an 800MHz FSB, a 512KB L2 cache, and will cost a mere $51 USD (in thousand-unit quantities). All of the E1000 series will be based on the Core 2 Duo micro-architecture, and will be 45nm parts.

You can read the official press release, Google-translated from Japanese, here.

Apple Creates Software Development Kit for IPhone

Big deal, most would say, every console or device that hopes to catch on needs an SDK (Software Development Kit), so that popular games and applications can run on the device. However, for quite a while, Apple seemed to think it was impervious to this law of the market. With the latest iPhone controversy however, involving lawsuits of network-locking and possible toxicity, Apple decided it was for the better if they let third-party developers put their stuff on the iPhone. An SDK will be shipped to anyone who wants one as soon as all the kinks are worked out, which Apple estimates to be some time in February 2008.

Soldier Of Fortune: Payback Banned In Australia

According to the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification's (OFLC), SoF:Payback is too violent and gory for the country. Like the Manhunt 2 controversy, the OFLC refused to rate SoF:Payback, making it illegal to sell the game anywhere inside the country to anyone. The main reasons that the OFLC deemed SoF:Payback to be too much for Australia:
  • The game contains too much "high impact violence", which exceeds even Australia's MA15+ rating.
  • The game contains "substantial blood spray", blood splatters on the ground and wall, and the ability for gamers to target specific body parts

Intel Prepares to Slash 2000 More Jobs

Intel plans to cut an additional 2,000 jobs from its payroll to cut costs, executives announced Oct. 16 after an earnings report that showed both income and margins up in the third quarter of 2007. Password-Stealing Trojan Targets Skype

A password-stealing Trojan is targeting Skype, posing as a security plug-in for the popular VOIP and IM service and displaying a fake log-in screen that's almost identical to the real thing. McAfee's Avert Labs is identifying the Trojan as PWS-Pykse, and F-Secure is referring to it as Trojan-Spy.Win32.Skyper.B. Skype is calling it 65404-SkypeDefenderSetup.exe. The Trojan identifies itself as the "Skype-Defender" plug-in and is attempting to steal Skype usernames and passwords, along with all usernames and passwords saved in Internet Explorer. After execution, the Trojan disables running instances of Skype and swaps in its fake Skype login window. If the victim enters his or her username and password, the malware captures it and any others saved in IE and posts it via http to a Web site for the malware author to retrieve. Security researchers, and Skype, are recommending that users update their antivirus detections to avoid infection.

Intel’s First Nehalem Processors for Desktops Set to Emerge in Q4 2008.

Intel's code-named Nehalem processors first emerged in long-term Intel's roadmap back in 2002 and, as it turns out now, five years later, the actual chips based on the Nehalem micro-architecture will emerge in the fourth quarter of 2008. But one thing those initial Nehalem processors not expected to deliver is integrated graphics core.

Intel's Nehalem processors are based on the brand new micro-architecture that is not only more efficient and advanced compared to Intel Core 2, it is also feature a new multi-threading technology, which will allow to virtually double the amount of cores available. But besides integrated memory controller and a new type of processor bus called Intel Quick Path Interconnect (QPI), the Nehalem promises very high customizability. For example, Intel can add a built-in graphics core into Nehalem central processing units and alter the number of memory controller channels besides changing the number of operating processing engines.

The first implementation of Nehalem micro-architecture will be code-named Intel Bloomfield central processing unit (CPU), according to sources familiar with Intel Corp.'s plans. The chip will have two or four cores, depending on positioning, and will be able to process up to eight threads simultaneously thanks to a technology similar to Intel's Hyper-Threading.

Apple Drops Price of DRM-free iTunes

Apple has dropped the price of its iTunes Plus songs that have no digital rights management (DRM) software protection and allow owners to move song files freely from one device to another. The 256kbps DRM-free song files were originally priced at $1.29 per song with a lower per-song average price for buying an entire album. iTunes now seems to be offering the same files for 99 cents per song, the same price it charges for its usual 128kbps DRM versions.
iTunes Plus has been incredibly popular with our customers, and now we're making it available at an even more affordable price,
Tom Neumayr, senior manager for iPods, Apple TV and iTunes, said in a statement. The change closely follows Amazon.com's launch of its own digital-music store.

Microsoft Patents Using Electroencephalograph Signals for Activity Recognition

Microsoft says that it is hard to properly evaluate the way people interact with computers since questioning them at the time is distracting and asking questions later may not produce reliable answers. "Human beings are often poor reporters of their own actions," the company says. Instead, Microsoft wants to read the data straight from the user's brain as he or she works away. They plan to do this using electroencephalograms (EEGs) to record electrical signals within the brain. The trouble is that EEG data is filled with artifacts caused, for example, by blinking or involuntary actions, and this is hard to tease apart from the cognitive data that Microsoft would like to study. So the company has come up with a method for filtering EEG data in such a way that it separates useful cognitive information from the not-so-useful non-cognitive stuff. The company hopes that the data will better enable to them to design user interfaces that people find easy to use. Whether users will want Microsoft reading their brain waves is another matter altogether.

Electromagnetic Wormholes May Make 3D TVs Possible

A professor of mathematics at the University of Rochester named Allan Greenleaf has solved a mathematical problem which could bring electromagnetic wormholes (EMW) into existence. These EMWs would create a full invisibility cloak in a tube which surrounds whatever they were employed to hide. Such devices could eventually be employed to make true 3D TV possible, and without special glasses. Researchers themselves admit this is a long way off from practical application. However, scientists are now theorizing about such things and believe that they are ultimately possible.

Xbox360 'Arcade' Disk May Have Nothing More Than Demos

While the Xbox360 Arcade package was just pictured yesterday, it may not be as fun as initially thought. Rumor had it that there would be five games pre-loaded on that console: Pac-Man Championship, Uno, Boom-Boom Rocket, Feeding Frenzy, and Luxor 2. However, one of the guys that got their hands on the Xbox360 Arcade console got a nasty surprise: there were indeed five games packaged with the game, but they were all just demos. However, this was a version of the Xbox360 that has not even been officially announced by Microsoft yet. Hopefully, Microsoft will put the full versions of the games in the retail version of the Xbox 360 Arcade.

Nintendo Market Value Worth 10 Trillion Yen

It seems as though all of Nintendo's efforts to make fine, enjoyable products is paying off handsomely. Nintendo's market value is officially worth over 10 trillion yen, which is equivalent to approximately $85 billion USD. This prosperity is almost certainly due to the popularity of the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. Nintendo's extremely high market value puts it in third place as Japan's most valuable company, shortly behind Toyota and Mitsubishi. The event that pushed Nintendo's stock above the 10 trillion mark was the announcement of the Wii Fit's release date, which is December 1st.

AMD Prepares 'CrossFire X' Technology

While ATI CrossFire technology was introduced in early 2005, delays and the wide adoption of NVIDIA SLI platforms prevented CrossFire from really catching on. AMD hopes to change that by introducing a little ace-in-the-hole that's currently nicknamed 'CrossFire X'. The CrossFire X initiative aims to increase scalability, performance, reliability, and flexibility of CrossFire platforms with the help of the AMD 790 chipsets, PCI Express 2, and new graphics cards. The most noticeable things CrossFire X will do are listed below.
  • 3/4 way CrossFire
  • Allow for two or more completely different cards to be combined under the same CrossFire Platform
  • CrossFire Overdrive, which allows for the dramatic increase of graphics clocks across a CrossFire platform, regardless of how many cards said platform may consist of.
  • CrossFire Hybrid, which allows for the combination of integrated/onboard graphics and graphics card rendering, disabling the latter when it is not needed to reduce power consumption.

AMD Considering New Naming Scheme for Processors

According to X-Bit labs, we may see an entirely new naming scheme for all processors coming out of AMD's factories. A basic run-down of how the changes would re-name current and future products...
  • AMD Phenom FX - quad-core microprocessors for enthusiasts with or without capability to work in pairs.
  • AMD Phenom 9000 - quad-core processors for single-socket machines.
  • AMD Phenom 7000 - triple-core microprocessors.
  • AMD Athlon 6000 - dual-core microprocessors.
  • AMD Athlon LE-1000 - single-core microprocessors.
  • AMD Sempron LE-1000 - single-core microprocessors.
In the long term, this new naming nomenclature will make things a lot easier for customer, retailer, and manufacturer alike. However, in early 2008, when this naming scheme might take effect, it could cause some confusion.

ASUS EeePC Coming to Newegg and Best Buy First, Will Cost $199USD

GMail Accounts Get 3 GB of Storage Space

When GMail was first unleashed in 2004, its 1GB of storage space quickly put it ahead of the competition. Now, GMail is looking to further that previous lead, by booting storage space up to 3GB. The reason behind GMail's new storage space is a simple lack of space in some GMail accounts. Google saw a problem, and quickly found a way to fix it. Google Apps will also have storage space increased to 3GB, and Premier Google Apps members will get between 10 and 25GB of storage space.

Pirate Bay Buys Former Anti-Piracy Site

One of the world's largest and well known torrent trackers recently found a new domain name: IFPI.com. IFPI stands for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. While this may seem like it has absolutely nothing to do with piracy, the IFPI is actually the parent organization of the more well-known RIAA and BPI (British Phonographic Industry). The IFPI used to sue piracy firms just as often, if not more often, as the RIAA. Now that the Pirate Bay acquired the address, they quickly took the liberty of re-assigning the initials. IFPI now stands for International Federation of Pirate Interests, according to Pirate Bay administrator Brokep. The old IFPI is not pleased with this maneuver. Fortunately for the International Federation of Pirate Interests group, efforts to regain the domain are going nowhere fast. At this point, it seems as though the Pirate Bay attained a hearty treasure.

NVIDIA Confirms 1.5GHz 8800GT With 112 Shader Processors

While AMD is working hard on putting the finishing touches on the RV670, NVIDIA isn't going to let itself just be forgotten about. In an NVIDIA presentation slide, the 8800GT got confirmed as having 112 shaders working at an impressive 1.5GHz. This is much better than the 96 shaders at 1.2GHz rumor heard earlier. The actual core/memory clocks are still up in smoke though. However, the latest rumors hint that they will be around 600/900 for the core and memory, respectively. The VRAM will be 256-bit GDDR3, the amount of which will be determined by manufacturers. Expect the cards to cost between $199 and $249 USD when they hit retail channels worldwide.

Intel Shows Off Working Quad-Core Laptop Processor at IDF 2007

During his keynote presentation at the start of IDF Taiwan (October 15-16) Mooly Eden, vice president of mobile platforms group, Intel, demonstrated a working quad-core CPU design which will eventually target notebook platforms. Intel is still in the early stages of development. Intel claimes the chip contains 840 million transistors and will run at a power envelope of 45W, slightly higher than Intel's mainstream TDP of 35W, meaning that the extra performance is going to come at an understandable hit in battery life. Intel said it is on track to launch the CPU in the second half of 2008. Also during the keynote address, Eden presented a new strategy for cooling notebooks based on compressor technology similar to that used in refrigerators and air conditioners. The compressor on display was a cylinder about 2cm in diameter and 10cm long and Eden showcased a notebook stand and cooling system containing three compressors which he claimed can reduce notebook chassis temperatures by around 10-degrees Celsius. Eden also showed how the compressors can be incorporated directly with a notebook's heatsink and fan assembly to be installed internally in the system. Finally, Eden also revealed a material Intel is developing that is permeable to air but acts as a barrier for liquids. Using the material, notebook makers will be able to design notebooks that take air for cooling through the keyboard rather than from vents on the underside or rear, commonly used in the notebooks today.

ASUS May Expand Branded Notebook PC Business

The branded notebook business is part of ASUSTeK Computer's long-term strategy and the company does not rule out the possibility of sustaining the growth of its brand-product business through acquisition, according to Jonathan Tsang, president for sales and marketing at ASUSTeK. Tsang's statement indicated that ASUSTeK may follow Acer's step in expanding its share of in the global notebook market after the company officially spins off its ODM business in 2008. An acquisition would be a positive choice since ASUSTeK has recently mapped out a "Double Three" plan, aiming to be among the top-five companies in the global notebook market within three years and further to lift its ranking into the top-three in another three years. ASUSTeK currently is ranked as the number one branded notebook vendor in Taiwan and Russia and is also one of the leading brands in Asia. In addition, the company is expected to ship a total of seven million notebooks in 2007, including three to four million own-brand models.

Gabe Newell Speaks on Porting Games to Consoles

The Orange Box released earlier this week, giving PC faithful and Xbox 360 gamers the best effort from Valve Software yet. Those who own only PlayStation 3s, however, will have to sit by the sidelines to watch other games rave over the innovations introduced in Portal, the fun of Team Fortress 2 and the sheer brilliance of Episode 2. If Valve Software could have had its way, the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box would be on stores shelves right now - but the version of the game for Sony's console is actually in the hands the title's publisher, Electronic Arts.

Intel X48 Chipset May Hurt X38 Sales

Intel recently launched its high-end 3 series chipset X38 in the market, however with details of a chip revision, the X48 chipset, exposed, some motherboard makers are concerned that the X48 may hurt demand for motherboards based on the X38 chipset. Intel recently delivered X48 A0 test samples to motherboard makers. The chipset is expected to launch between the end of 2007 and January 2008 after testing, while motherboards should start appear on the market in the first quarter of 2008. With the X48's launch expected to come only three months later than X38, it could lead to a short life cycle for the X38, causing a delay in market demand.

S3 Launching DirectX 10 Graphics Chips Soon

Unfortunately there aren't many technical specifications, but a couple of pictures of S3 Graphics' new Destination 2 (D2) and Destination 3 (D3) graphics processors have been leaked onto the internet. All that is really known about them at present is that they will support DirectX 10, with D2 (shown on the left of the first image below) being manufactured using a 90nm process and D3 (right of the first image and shown in the second image) manufactured using a 65nm process. Both chips will be manufactured by Fujitsu, with graphics cards using D2 being called Chrome 450 and 460 and cards equipped with D3 called Chrome 430 and 440. Apparently HP has already ordered some of the D2 chips, which are essentially ready to be launched, whilst the D3 chips are still in the process of driver testing.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade Spotted in the Wild

Although not yet released, the existence of Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade package has been confirmed. The unit has been rumored to replace the Core model. Photographs confirm the $279.99 price point, and indicate that the games Boom-Boom Rocket, Pac-man, Uno, Feeding Frenzy, and Luxor 2 are indeed included on a compilation disc. Like the Core, the Arcade model comes without hard drive, but includes 256MB memory card, wireless controller, and HDMI port. The reason given for this early stock availability is human error - incorrect shipping date.

NVIDIA bringing in 3-Way

NVIDIA is getting its 3-way SLI ready for its November 12th launch. To run your own 3-Way SLI setup you will need the following three things. First, you will need the upcoming 3-way SLI drivers. Second, you will need a 680i SLI motherboard or a soon to be released 780a/780i SLI motherboard that must include at least 3 PCIe x16 slots. Third, you will need to have three GeForce 8800 GTX or 8800 Ultra graphics cards(It is a necessity to have 2 SLI connectors on each card). Lastly you will need a 3-way SLI bridge card. Interestingly it looks like the upcoming G92 won't support 3-way SLI because it only has one SLI connector per card.

Intel Prepares Dual-Core Celeron Microprocessors

The first Intel Celeron E1200 dual-core processor will work at 1.60GHz, utilize 800MHz processor system bus and feature 512KB of unified secondary-level cache. It is set for release in the first quarter of 2008 to target cost-effective desktops. Later during the year Intel plans to add more chips into the Intel Celeron E1000 dual-core lineup, creating a comprehensive family of affordable chips with two processing engines. Intel's Celeron E1000 dual-core processors are set to be made using 65nm process technology and are projected to fit into 65W thermal design power envelope. The new CPUs will be drop-in compatible with all platforms that support code-named Conroe processors. Given relatively low clock-speed and not a large cache, it is unlikely that Intel Celeron E1000 dual-core microprocessors will show incredible performance. Nevertheless, the forthcoming emergence of the new chips is proof that multi-core technology is rushing into the value segment of the market.

iPhone Lawsuit Seeks Over $1 Billion in Damages

Lawyers filed a class action lawsuit against Apple and AT&T seeking $1.2 billion in damages because the iPhone is locked to AT&T's wireless network. The suit also notes that Apple will not allow unauthorized applications on the iPhone. Filed on behalf of Paul Holman in the State of Washington and Lucy Rivello in California, the lawsuit explains that in the United States the SIM chip is locked to the wireless carrier, not the hardware device. Damian Fernadez, the attorney who filed the state suit explains in court documents what Apple is accused of:
Apple punished consumers for exercising their rights to unlock their iPhones. Apple issued a software update that 'bricked' or otherwise caused iPhone malfunctions for consumers who unlocked their phones and installed the update. Apple's unlawful trust with AT&T substantially lessens competition and tends to create a monopoly in trade and commerce throughout the entire United States.
Apple and AT&T both declined to comment on the story.

Acer and Gateway to Complete Merger Within the Next Few Days

Acer has acquired over 90 percent of outstanding shares of Gateway, paving the way for completion of the deal, announced in August, to buy U.S. PC vendor Gateway for around 710 million USD through a tender offer for the company's shares. Acer announced that its investment subsidiary, set up to buy Gateway stock, had finished the tender offer and would soon finalize the deal. The two companies will formally merge within the next few days, and the deal will be closed by Oct. 16. Gateway's stock will cease to trade on the New York Stock Exchange by that date. Analysts predict, the Acer-Gateway deal and the pending arrangement for Gateway to buy European PC vendor Packard Bell, will put the Taiwanese company in a position to challenge Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. for U.S. market share. Blocking rival Lenovo Group Ltd. from gaining ground in Europe through its planned purchase of Packard Bell. Gateway will continue to operate under its own name as a subsidiary of Acer, and the company expects to expand its product offerings. Acer said it was gratified by the enthusiasm in which Gateway employees and clients have reacted to the acquisition. In a separate statement, Acer said it borrowed 607.2 million USD from Citigroup Inc. for use in the Gateway purchase.

Lastly AMD will be pushing back the 790FX (RD790) and AMD 770 (RX780) launch dates from November 5th to November 20th.

Bungie Updates Halo 3 Matchmaking System in Xbox Live

With an estimated 4.4 million players, Bungie has an obligation to provide a quality multi-player environment for Halo 3 gamers. Fortunately, that's exactly what they are doing. Bungie recently announced a lot of changes to the way Halo 3 servers match up gamers. The most important change: There will be a lot less "shottie snipers" lying around, to the disappointment of whiny 10 year old brats around the world. The rest of the changes, which are already incorporated into Xbox Live...
  • Big Team Battle matches are now 16-player affairs.
  • In the Team Slayer playlist, the appearance of Shotty Snipers has been greatly reduced.
  • Now, when players veto Shotty Snipers, the game that results from the veto will not be Shotty Snipers.
  • In one-sided VIP matches, the attacking team will now see a waypoint for the VIP they are hunting.
  • In Lone Wolves, Slayer gametypes will appear more frequently.

New Linux Distro, Vixta, Looks Surprisingly Like Vista

While some current Linux users got Linux to escape from their perceived problems with Vista, other Linux users are attracted to Linux because of Vista-like features. The developers behind Vixta are banking on the latter. While the SourceForge project is hardly ready to compete with Vista on a competitive scale, it certainly is gaining momentum. Vixta is based on the Fedora core of Linux, and has five goals in mind. Vixta must...
  • Be Absolutely free, in every sense.
  • Spread Linux to the "masses".
  • Not require any advanced configuration.
  • Be User-Friendly.
  • Be Eye-catching, and have a familiar look and feel.

Xbox 360 to Get New Motherboard Next Year - Jasper

According to Dean Takahashi from San Jose Mercury News, Microsoft plans to outfit the Xbox 360 console with a new motherboard code-named Jasper. Jasper is the successor to the board dubbed Falcon, which is inside Xbox 360s currently hitting the market. Jasper will have a new version of the ATI Technologies graphics chip based on a 65nm manufacturing process. Currently, the graphics chip of the Xbox 360 uses a 90-nanometer process. With the new version, the graphics chip will dissipate less heat, be physically smaller, and cost less to produce. The new Jasper board will also have smaller memory chips. Microsoft declined to comment on the story.

Grand Theft Auto IV Could Break Halo 3 Sales Record

Microsoft is extremely proud of their Halo 3 franchise, as they should be. Making $300 million in the first week of sales is no small feat. However, some analysts are predicting that Grand Theft Auto IV might have what it takes to break this record. The monetary sales figures do not give us an exact amount of Halo 3 copies sold, but analysts guess that the numbers are awfully close to 4.4 million units sold out of 5.2 million shipped. Analysts claim that Grand Theft Auto IV has all the features of Halo and more: the enormous fan-base, the high-quality graphics, and the relatively early release of a sequel. Combine this with the Grand Theft Auto IV release on the PS3 as well as the Xbox360, and sales figures are already estimated at between 3.5 and 5.3 million units in the first week. And if, for some reason, Grand Theft Auto IV was adopted at the same rate as Halo 3, then there would be approximately 9.5 million sales in that first week, which means $466 million dollars in sales.

Apple Recalls MacBook Pro MagSafe Adapters

Apple Inc. has halted shipments of MagSafe power adapters for its MacBook Pro notebook line as a result of quality design issues and is presently working on a fix. Apple began pulling inventory of the 85W power supplies from its retail stores a few weeks ago. Apple also discontinued shipments to third party retailers ahead of "redesigned" models that are expected to ship in about 2 to 3 weeks. Reports claim that the thermal insulation of the adapter cords has a tendency to heat up and fray near both the power brick and the MagSafe connector, creating a potentially serious hazard. Another issue is a tendency for the tiny pins inside the MagSafe connector to improperly spring back into place, resulting in a faulty connection between the MagSafe connector and the MacBook Pro's built-in power adapter port. And lastly, some adapters are showing signs of a defect where the LED indicator light on the MagSafe connecter will intermittently shut off even though the adapter continues to charge the MacBook Pro.

Manhunt 2 Banned in the UK – Again

After initially being banned in the UK almost four months ago, the revised version of Manhunt 2 has yet again been refused a classification by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which effectively bans the game from being sold in the UK. The modified version of the game did manage to receive a Mature rating in the USA after initially being given an Adults Only rating, but in the UK the BBFC ruled that the "casually sadistic nature" of kills in Manhunt 2 is still unacceptable, despite Rockstar reducing some of the visual detail of executions. Any decision to appeal now rests with Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's publisher, although Rockstar is unlikely to continue making the game family-friendly just to get it a UK rating.

Another Lawsuit for Apple iPhone

Second anti-iPhone lawsuit in two weeks alleges that Apple violated antitrust laws. A California man filed a lawsuit accusing Apple Inc. of violating antitrust law because its iPhone forces buyers to use AT&T Inc. as their wireless carrier and the company "bricked" phones that had been modified to call over other networks. Timothy Smith filed the lawsuit Friday with a California state court in San Jose seeking class-action status. The suit demands that Apple be barred from selling locked iPhones and that it be required to provide warranty service for owners of unlocked devices. The lawsuit also asks for unspecified monetary damages. In the lawsuit Smith alleges that Apple violated several California antitrust statutes when it tied the smart phone to AT&T and prohibited customers from using other carriers. The company also unveiled a 40GB PS3 due to go on sale this Wednesday, but gave no indication at the time when the 60GB model will be discontinued.
Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two SKU's announced on Friday, but as the 60GB stock is depleted the GBP 299 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward,
said a spokesperson for SCEE. Sony has already phased out the 60GB model in North America, where an 80GB unit sells for USD 599 with a copy of MotorStorm.

However, Melissa Johnson, a Seagate product manager, says the sub-par performance for all HHDs stems from first generation issues with both the BIOS and Vista device drivers because they do not know how to properly utilize the flash memory.

Microsoft Genuine Advantage Servers Fail to Validate Anything For Hours

When the common user sees a patch for Windows that should have come with Windows Update and didn't, it's no big deal. The user simply goes to the Microsoft website, downloads the patch, runs the Windows Genuine Validation tool, and goes on their merry way. However, for at least four hours this morning, nobody could do that. The servers glitched, and from 12AM EDT to at least 4AM EDT, nobody could validate anything, from Windows Media Player 11 to Windows Vista Ultimate. There is no official word from Microsoft as to what caused this temporary bug or how they are planning to make sure this doesn't happen again.

IPod Nano Ignites; Engulfs User's Trousers in Flames

An American airport worker was minding his own business and doing his job when all the sudden, he felt what he describes as a "burning sensation" coming from his pocket. He looked down, and saw a huge jet of flames streaming out of his pants. He was promptly "freaked out" when said jet of flames started licking the rest of his pants. Fortunately he was able to put out the fire before the fire did serious harm, but the point remains. Are iPod Nanos the next exploding laptop? The actual cause of the fire remains an utter mystery, and Apple already shipped a replacement unit for the unfortunate airport worker, who had this to say about the whole experience.
So I look down and I see flames coming up to my chest. If (the US Transportation Security Administration) had come by and seen me smoking, they could have thought I was a terrorist.

Led Zeppelin: 'I Wish EBay Would Drop Dead and Die.'

EBay is known for selling all sorts of interesting goodies. Among them are tickets to the Led Zeppelin reunion show. When Led Zeppelin promotor Harvey Goldstein heard about this, he tried to get eBay to stop selling these tickets. According to Goldstein, eBay "basically told us to **** off". And so, in response to this, Goldstein vowed to seriously mess with the lives of the people selling these tickets on eBay. Goldstein plans on messing up the lives of these people by declaring the tickets purchased off eBay null and void, which will cause a nightmare for a lot of hardcore Led Zeppelin fans. Checking whether or not a ticket was purchased off eBay is surprisingly easy, all they have to do at the box office is deny entry to anyone who bought the ticket with a different credit card than they have. The Led Zeppelin Reunion show will take place on November 26 at London's 02 Arena.

American Department of Homeland Security DDoS' Itself

A simple blunder in an E-mail server's code recently caused the Department of Homeland Security to give itself a miniature DDoS attack. Here's the low-down on what happened: a reader of the DHS' daily Open Source Intelligence Report replied to the list address with a request for a change. The message quickly found itself E-mailed to all subscribers of the newsletters, which numbers in the thousands, for reasons unknown. Unfortunately, once those subscribers got the request, they also got the list of recipients. When the good subscribers tried to report this problem, the same problem happened to the server, and every subscriber quickly found themselves knee-deep in E-mails asking for an un-subscription. That's not the only E-mail passed around the DHS network, though. Subscribers also received requests to cease replying, urgent requests from the Department of Defense and DHS officials for recipients to "kindly stop now please," a "vote for me" political ad, job offers and updates on the local weather. All in all, the server sent, received, and otherwise handled 2.2 million E-mails over the course of an hour, causing a mini-DDoS. The problem is resolved now, and the DHS is ensuring that such a problem will never happen again.

IPhone Firmware v1.1.1 Exploits and Hacks Appearing

With Firmware v1.1.1, Apple aimed to do more than prevent users from accessing other networks: they were trying to fix critical security holes. While their efforts did work temporarily, hackers recently are proclaiming that they are cracking those security measures. Hackers claim that a special TIFF file can cause a buffer overflow error in Mobile Safari, rendering the iPhone itself vulnerable. While these hacks are nowhere near as easy to use as what was happening in previous versions of firmware, it's definitely a start. There is no word as to when firmware v1.1.1 will be hacked to the point where alternative networks are available for the iPhone.

McDonald's to Offer Free Wireless Internet in United Kingdom

Seeking a new way to bring customers to McDonald's, McDonald's now is the proud owner of the largest free wireless internet provider in the United Kingdom. Every McDonald's restaurant within the United Kingdom will give their customers free access to wireless internet in the store. This is a vast improvement from the regular way to access wireless internet in the UK, which generally involves a contract/pay-as-you-go service, which can add up to 5 pounds per log-in. After the 1,200+ McDonald's restaurants all have free wireless internet, they will own 10% of all wireless coverage in the UK.

Bungie to Continue Making Games for Xbox 360/PC

While some people would think that the ending of the epic partnership between Microsoft and Bungie would stop Bungie from making games exclusively for the Xbox (360) and PC. Fortunately for Xbox 360 and PC fans everywhere, these rumors have been greatly exaggerated. Bungie saw a lot of previous success by making things Xbox (360) exclusive, and will continue along that path, instead of buying PS3 and Wii development kits. Bungie actually has no intentions to make anything for any other console unless something changes in the future.

Preliminary Benchmarks Show RV670 Superiority Over G92

According to some "highly ranked sources", the RV670 is beating NVIDIA's G92 in preliminary benchmarks. When the two reference boards are pitted against each other in an epic battle of 3Dmark06, the RV670 earns 11,400 3DMarks, and the G92 earns 10,800 3DMarks. If these benchmarks are even remotely accurate, this would prove that the new mid-range parts from both companies will be worthy competitors to the high-end parts. As comparison, the current 8800Ultra, which retails for about $600USD now, gets 12,500 in 3DMark06. Hopefully, with driver optimizations and finalized retail board designs, we will see a feisty fight for the 3DMark06 crown, and marked performance increases.

HP Adds Blu-Ray, HD DVD options on Select Pavilion Desktops

HP on Friday quietly updated its Pavilion media center PCs with the option of mixed-format Blu-Ray and HD DVD drives that let the towers read either format without fear of their becoming obsolete. The d4995t, as well as the system builder's m9000z and m9000t Pavilion Elite models, all have the option of two HD-ready optical drives. A basic version of the drive is capable of full Blu-Ray burning but will only read its rival HD DVD format. A top-end drive will write both formats. Both drives also incorporate HP's LightScribe feature for burning a label graphic directly to each disc; each also records to legacy CD and DVDs. The cost of the upgrade varies depending on the system, but typically adds $250 for the more limited combo drive and $400 for the dual-format burner.

Kim Jong-Il: 'I'm An Internet Expert!'

For the second time ever, the leaders of North and South Korea met to talk about the state of the country. The conversation at one point or another turned to the leader of South Korea asking for internet access for South Korean companies operating in a North Korean industrial district. Kim Jong-Il's response:
I'm an Internet expert too. It's all right to wire the industrial zone only, but there are many problems if other regions of the North are wired. If that problem is addressed, there is no reason not to open (web access).
Kim Jung-Il did not elaborate on what those problems were, but it might have something to do with the explicit ban on any citizen of North Korea to access the internet or use a mobile phone, outside of the government.

New DRM for Blu-Ray Fails; Backfires

In another move against pirates worldwide, Sony unveiled and attempted to adopt "BD+", a type of virtual-machine encryption that allows a Blu-ray disk to determine if the player is hacked. Unfortunately, the earliest adoptions of BD+ show abysmal results. Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer and The Day After Tomorrow are the first two movies to feature BD+ encryption, and neither of them will play on Samsung's BDP-1200 and LG's BH100. While both companies promise to release firmware upgrades within the coming weeks, there is a bigger problem: disks with BD+ loaded on them take up to two minutes longer to load than their encryption-free brethren. And even when the disk does play, there's a good chance that it will either crash or stutter during playback.

Wii Remote Sleeving Program to Cost Nintendo $17.2 Million USD

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced that it would give each household up to four Wii remote jackets, free of charge, and would start including said jackets with future Wii consoles. However, this program isn't going to be free of charge for Nintendo. With 10 million consoles already sold, Nintendo will have to make 40 million sleeves, to live up to their promise, which will cost a grand total of no less than $17.2 million USD.

Apple Exploring Pressure-Sensitive Touchscreens, Touchpads

Seeking to improve its portable devices, Apple has applied for a patent that could lead to touch-sensitive Macs or handhelds which react to the level of force, rather than just contact. Originally submitted in March of last year but only published on Thursday, the patent for a "Force Imaging Input and Device System" describes today's touchscreens and touchpads as limited by their relatively simple input, which tracks just the location of the finger or stylus on the surface. A method of detecting the strength of the user's input would add a new element of control, according to Apple. The patent's inventors Brian Huppi and Steven Hotelling have suggested lining touchpads with a set of traces joined together by a sandwich-like spring membrane layer underneath the surface. Touching the pad would deform the traces and create a capacitive image in circuitry, indicating where contact has been made. But unlike traditional capacitive or resistive touch surfaces, the membrane would help create a second image that recognizes just how much pressure has been applied at a given point; the harder the user pushes, the closer the membrane reaches conductive elements inside the layer and the more force would be registered with each press. Computers, phones, PDAs, and control panels are listed as candidates for the technique, although Apple is not obliged to manufacture any products using its invention.

Gears of War Coming to PC on November 6th

While Gears of War is fast approaching it's first birthday, a PC version is being planned for a November 6th release. Fans of the Xbox 360 version of Gears of War will be happy to know it's not just another lousy port of a console game. DirectX10 support make the visuals positively breathtaking, there are five new single-player chapters (including an encounter with Brumak), three new multiplayer maps, a "king of the hill" multiplayer mode, and of course a map editor. For those truly curious as to the current shape of Gears of War PC, check out the 1Up preview here.

Crysis May Come to Consoles, Depending on Sales/Ratings

In an interview with Game Informer, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that Crysis just might make it to consoles after all. Depending on a multitude of factors, including sales, ratings, reception, and criticism, Crytek will port a version of Crysis for an unspecified number of consoles. However, don't get too excited, console fans...
(People) are asking me if it's possible. Of course. You can get Crysis even on the Nintendo DS. But not that Crysis -- you cannot get Crysis as it is on PC on any console. What you would have to do is compromise the design and the level design. In order to make Crysis (playable on a console,) you would have to make a derivative Crysis and optimize it for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, if we do it, we'll optimize it for each platform."

Newegg Offers AMD Socket-AM2 Sempron 'Sparta' Edition

Part of AMD's marketing plan is to make creative, enticing names for their products. For one of their low-energy models, AMD's marketing department did a fine job creating a very memorable CPU core code-name: Sparta. For the low price of $46 shipped, you can have your very own Spartan computer part. This product offers more than an awesome name, however. The value-oriented part is built on a 65nm micro-architecture, requires only an impressive 45W of energy to run, runs at 1.9GHz with an FSB speed of 800MHz, has an L1 cache of 64KB+64KB, and an L2 cache of 256KB. Anyone hoping to own an AMD Sempron LE-1100 should follow the source link.

Wikipedia Entry on George W. Bush Vandalized

Wikipedia prides itself in being the only open source dictionary with the approximate accuracy of the Encyclopedia Britannica that anybody at all can edit. Unfortunately, the noble cause of Wikipedia is sometimes out-shined by the immature vandalism of punks. This would be one such case: the entry for George W. Bush (the current president of the United States of America) was recently vandalized to show the anti-Bush views of an un-named editor. Before the article even begins, it reads...
Quite Simply, The Worse President In History! A Terrorist HimSelf, and a truly "stupid" Mother F*cker who we all wish would leave this country for ever befor he starts another war and kills us all, he's just in it for the money, Watch ZeitGeistmovie.com "pt2" to see what really happened on 9/11/01
Needless to say, Wikipedia will get this sorted out very soon, and will also probably lock this article to editing in the future. For those of us who want a quick giggle before this happens, I saved a screenshot of the vandalism for our entertainment.

OLPC Laptop gets Tested

Many techPowerUp! readers will be aware of the One Laptop Per Child project, which aims to provide $100 laptops to children in developing countries. David Pogue from The New York Times has managed to get his hands on one of these laptops and given it a thorough testing, and the overall verdict is that the laptop is very impressive. Pogue praises features such as the sunlight-readable screen, the cheap and long-lasting battery and the WiFi mesh capability, as well as being impressed by how well the applications on the machine work. The laptop even survives a few drop and spill tests, which can be watched alongside the article on The New York Times' website. It is well worth reading if you are interested by the project - if you want to know more about it, visit the OLPC website.

R680 Appears in Latest Catalyst

Although there are no firm details about the specs yet, AMD has essentially confirmed that it is working on an R680 graphics processor by including it in the latest set of beta Catalyst drivers. According to VR-Zone the R680 will be released during the first quarter of 2008 and will support PCI Express 2.0, DX 10.1, Double Precision FP, Quad Crossfire and UVD, with a core clock frequency of 800MHz+ and 512MB/1GB GDDR3 memory. I would like to emphasise that those specs are just rumours though, and AMD has not made any official comment yet.

AMD to Show RV670 this Weekend

It looks like AMD is planning to unveil its new RV670 chip to the public this weekend at the World Cyber Games. The Radeon HD2950PRO (which uses the RV670 graphics processor) is set to be officially released on November 19th, with the specs suggesting that it will support DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.0, PCI Express 2.0, UVD and CrossFire. The card comes in two varieties, the higher performing Gladiator model which will have GPU and memory clocks of 825MHz and 2.4GHz respectively, with its little brother Revival having clocks of 750MHz and 1.8GHz respectively - presumably AMD will be showing the faster card this weekend if it wants to impress gamers. Hopefully this should mean that some reliable benchmarks could be available soon, which would allow for a comparison between the RV670 and the power-hungry R600.

Thermalright HR-01 X - A Dream Come True for Servers

We have received many distraught emails from users across the globe complaining that their stock cooler would not allow them to overclock their servers. Another issues brought up was the noise they have to tolerate from the high RPM fans in order to keep the CPU at mediocre operation level. To solve these problems we upgraded the original HR-01 with 6 heat pipes, and with its proprietary thru holes you can pair it up with any low RPM 120mm fan and add the ability and flexibility to OVERCLOCK! Sony Launches 40GB PS3 in Europe

The 40GB PlayStation 3 is indeed being confirmed by Sony. Announced today in London, the system that's been clamored over for what seems like ages now will launch throughout the SCEE territories on October 10th for 399 EUR (565 USD), which means you don't have too awfully long to wait before getting your hands on one. The new model features just a pair of USB 2.0 ports rather than four, it no longer boasts the multi-memory card port and it is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles. Also, the existing 60GB PS3 Starter Pack will be reduced to 499 EUR (707 USD), but only while supplies last.

Bungie Announces Independence After All

After all the rumors ciculating around the web for weeks, Bungie and Microsoft Corp. have finally announced a plan for Bungie Studios, the developers of Microsoft's "Halo" franchise, to become a privately held independent company, Bungie, LLC, in which Microsoft will hold a minority equity interest. As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship focused on the continued success of the "Halo" franchise. It is also the intent of both parties to expand their partnership to include new IP created and owned by Bungie.

Microsoft Releases .NET Source Code

Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET has always been an industry leader in providing a programming and debugging environment for numerous languages including Visual C++, C++/#, J/J#, Visual Basic, and many more. However, despite the general good sentiment about the product, Microsoft was often criticized for not revealing the source code to its libraries. Now Microsoft is taking steps towards open sourcing its code and finally is letting developers peek under the hood as it releases the source code to various .NET component libraries. The initial release will contain source code for the .NET Base Class Libraries (System, System.IO, System.Collections, System.Configuration, System.Threading, System.Net, System.Security, System.Runtime, System.Text, etc), ASP.NET (System.Web), Windows Forms (System.Windows.Forms), ADO.NET (System.Data), XML (System.Xml), and WPF (System.Windows). Later Microsoft will release the source code for other remaining libraries as well, including WCF, Workflow, and LINQ. The move is detailed on the blog of Scott Gu, a Microsoft employee.

Apple Patches Year-Old Windows QuickTime Vulnerability

Apple has taken another swing at fixing a troublesome spate of QuickTime vulnerabilities. The company released an update for the Windows version of QuickTime media player on Wednesday afternoon to patch what Apple calls a "command injection issue" in the way the media player handles URLs. The flaw, which affects Windows XP and Windows Vista, was first disclosed in September of 2006 by Petko D. Petkov, a penetration tester. Petkov noted in a blog post this September that he reported two QuickTime bugs in the early fall of 2006. Only one, however, was patched. To bring attention to the year-old vulnerability, Petkov posted several proof-of-concept exploits on his blog last month. The issue does not affect computers running Mac OS X, according to Apple.

Woman Fined $222,000 for Music Sharing

Jammie Thomas, a single mother from Minnesota, has been ordered to pay $222,000 in damages after being found guilty of illegally sharing music over the internet. Thomas was found to have shared over 1,700 files via Kazaa under the username Tereastarr, of which 24 were named in court. As a result she was ordered to pay $9,250 for each of the 24 songs, which totalled to $222,000. Thomas' defence attorney argued that there was no proof she was behind the keyboard sharing the songs, and forensic scientists were unable to find any evidence on her hard drive because it has been recently replaced. However, based on the fact that Thomas used the nickname Tereastarr for a number of internet services and that the sharing had been traced to her modem's MAC address the jury found her guilty of the charges. At the end of the case RIAA attorney Richard Gabriels said "This is what can happen if you don't settle."

Hitachi Develops 100GB Blu-ray Disk

Electronics company Hitachi has developed a new Blu-ray disk capable of holding 100GB of data by storing it on four layers - as well as maintaining compatibility with current Blu-ray hardware (providing that the firmware is updated). Whilst a 51GB three layer version of HD DVD was recently approved, Hitachi engineers have managed to almost double that figure, and the company is even working on an eight layer version of the Blu-ray disk which could potentially hold 200GB. At present Hitachi is focusing on improving the signal quality of the new disks so that they are ready for the market, but provided the manufacturing costs aren't significantly higher than those of the two layer disks it is likely film companies may opt to use these four layer disks in future so that they can fit even more high definition video on a single disk.

Latest iMacs Suffer From Graphics Freeze

Apple's latest iMacs suffer seem to suffer from a graphics card problem that causes the computer screens to lock up. Numerous discussion threads on Apple's support forums report that, while the iMac display becomes unresponsive, the Mac itself appears to work normally. Apparently indicating the fault relates to the iMac's ATI Radeon HD card. iMac users suffering the screen freeze can get their Mac working again with a hard restart. Some users claim the fault appeared after they had installed recent software drivers (v1.1) for the Radeon HD card -- others claim that restoring the iMac to factory settings fixes the machine. While Apple is alleged to be aware of the issue, no fix for the flaw has yet been made available.

Blizzard Death Knight Interview

Blizzard has revealed details of the first Hero class in World of Warcraft, the Death Knight. They've emerged in an official chit chat with designers working on WOW's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which will introduce the new class. The Death Knight is a tank hybrid created to offer an alternative to the Warrior when building a group. Blizzard felt this role was essential in almost every scenario, so an extra class here was needed. Specifically, Death Knights will focus more on attack than defence - but come equipped with taunting abilities so that they can maintain the attention of monsters trying to kill the rest of the group. Death Knights will also rely on a new rune system resource to power their attacks and spells, one separate to the existing mana, energy, and rage bars. But details on how exactly this will work are yet to be announced. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King was announced at the Leipzig Games Convention earlier in the year. It will up the level cap to 80, add a new Northrend continent, introduce the Inscription profession, use siege warfare to tear down buildings, give you more character customisation options, plus oodles of new dungeons, quests and items. Head over to the official World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King site to find out more.

NVIDIA Plans New GeForce 8800 GTS

It seems that NVIDIA is planning another GeForce 8800 GTS SKU with more stream processors. This is to widen the performance gap between the upcoming 8800 GT and 8800 GTS as 8800 GT is coming too close and it might hurt the sales of 8800 GTS. The number of stream processors will be increased from 96 to 112 while the rest of the specs like 500MHz/800MHz core/mem clock, 320-bit memory interface, and 320MB or 640MB GDDR3 flavors will remain unchanged. There is also an interesting side note that NVIDIA will not be doing any formal launch activities, press announcements, website updates, or any other marketing around this new SKU. Partners can conduct their own marketing activities.

Vista Continues to Gain Market Share

Despite its criticisms, Microsoft's latest operating system is gradually becoming more popular, with XP's market share now falling below 80%. In September the market share of Vista-based computers being used to browse the net rose to 7.38%, up by over one percent from the previous month, with Windows XP's market share falling by 1.16% to 79.32%. If Vista use continues to grow at this rate then it should account for over 10% of the market by December. Use of Mac operating systems also saw a rise, although it was less substantial than that of Vista, increasing from 6.15% to 6.61%.

New Entry-Level Xbox 360 Appears

It looks like Microsoft is planning to ditch the current core version of the Xbox 360 for a new model known as the Xbox 360 Arcade. It will share the same $279.99 price tag as its predecessor and will be sold with a 256MB memory card, which should allow users to save games without needing to spend at least $29.99 on a 64MB memory card. It was listed earlier on Amazon.com and the Toys "R" Us website, although it has since been removed from both, and rumours of other changes from the current core model include the possibility of five free Xbox Live Arcade games and perhaps a wireless controller as standard. The updated version of the console is scheduled to become available from 23rd October, with the Elite and Premium models expected to receive game bundles in order to make the Xbox 360 more attractive to consumers.

Japan Leads U.S. in Fast and Cheap Internet Connections.

The United States may be the world's largest economy, but when it comes to Internet connections at home, many Americans still live in the slow lane. By contrast, Japan is a broadband paradise with the fastest and cheapest Internet connections in the world. Nearly eight million Japanese have a fiber optic line at home that is as much as 30 times speedier than a typical DSL line. But while that speed is a boon for Japanese users, industry analysts and some companies question whether the push to install fiber is worth the effort, given the high cost of installation, affordable alternatives and lack of services that take advantage of the fast connections. "The Japanese think long-term," said Matteo Bortesi a technology consultant at Accenture in Tokyo. "If they think they will benefit in 100 years, they will invest for their grandkids. There's a bit of national pride we don't see
in the West."

NVIDIA to Launch IGP Chipsets for AMD in November

NVIDIA is planning to launch the AMD platform-based MCP72 IGP (integrated graphics processor) chipset at the end of November or the beginning of December this year, with mass production to start ahead in November. The chipset will come out in two versions, the high-end MCP72XE and the mainstream MCP72P, both supporting next generation PCI Express 2.0, HyperTransport 3.0 and the upcoming AMD Phenom processors. The MCP72XE will adopt a two chip design boasting dual 16x or quad 8x SLI modes, while the MCP72P will adopt single chip design supporting only dual 8x SLI mode. Also an advantage of the MCP72P is that it is pin compatible with the previous MCP65 chipsets, therefore motherboard makers should only need to make small modifications to their PCB designs helping to save costs.

Sunbeam UFO Acrylic Cube Case Review

Sunbeam UFO Acrylic Cube Case Review

The UFO Acrylic Cube case from Sunbeam has a lot of unique features for a clear plastic case. The cube design is unlike other clear cases I've seen, and its compact size makes it great for smaller systems or users with space restrictions. There is a large amount of "WOW-factor" that comes with a case like this, and it is sure to turn some heads.

Joost Internet TV Service Launched

Created by the founders of Skype and Kazaa, a free internet TV service known as Joost has just been launched after first being announced nine months ago. Joost allows users to choose from a selection of different shows and channels on their PCs, which are supported by advertising in similar to normal way TV commercials. In a blog, Joost said:
For us at Joost, we are exhausted, but excited. Many of us have put as much as two years of our lives into this little 'project,' and owe a great deal to our families for supporting us, to our friends for not ignoring us, and to all the beta testers who cheered us on and helped with ideas, feedback and lots of bug reporting.
Joost 1.0, which can be downloaded here for both Windows and Mac, is still in the beta stages, but from a quick look it seems fairly stable and is worth a try if you want to watch TV on your PC but don't have the necessary hardware.

Portal Pre-Load Underway

Those who pre-purchased Valve's first person brain twister Portal through Steam, either in the $44.99 ultra compilation The Orange Box or by its $19.99 separate listing, can now begin downloading the game's assets. Commonly referred to as pre-loading, the idea is to let gamers gradually download a game in advance so they only need to download a small enabling file on the day of its release, preventing owners from being held back by slow download speeds and clogged servers. With The Orange Box gone gold and confirmed to release on October 10th for PC and Xbox 360, the pre-load for Half-Life 2: Episode Two is also expected to begin shortly.

Scientists Invent 30 Year Continuous Power Laptop Battery

Your next laptop could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The breakthrough betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source. As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years. Although betavoltaic batteries sound Nuclear they're not. Betavoltaics generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material. The process uses beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This makes the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell. Electrons scatter out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and into the circuit creating a usable electric current. The profile of the batteries can be quite small and thin, also the reaction is non-thermal which means laptops and other small devices like mobile phones will run much cooler than with traditional lithium-ion power batteries. If all goes well plans are for these cells to reach store shelves in about 2 to 3 years.

Microsoft Responds to Bungie Split Rumours

Microsoft has distanced itself from rumours that it will be splitting with Halo developer Bungie, claiming it never said anything of the sort.
There's been no such announcement,
We continue to celebrate the tremendous success of the global phenomenon that is Halo 3.
a spokesperson told Eurogamer.net. The claim first came from a blog spreading the news all over the net. Click here to read our version of the story posted earlier today.

Rumor: Bungie Studios to Leave Microsoft?

According to someone who works in Bungie, as of yesterday, Bungie is no longer working for or with Microsoft. Their proof of this lies within Bungie's global address book. If you ask any employee of Bungie to find any Microsoft contacts in that address book, you will find nothing. If this is true, Microsoft will post the press release on October 6th, to avoid affecting quarterly results. Microsoft is also rumored to keep the entire Halo franchise. The same Bungie employee has this to say regarding why Microsoft and Halo may have split:
Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to "handle" everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry). So as of today they are their own independent entity. They'll probably make Halo 4 for Microsoft, however hey are also free to create new intellectual properties for whatever system they want. (Even though they prefer the xbox platform)
Neither company has confirmed or denied any of this. We will have to wait until October 6th to see anything official.

BFG Ageia PhysX Card Review

BFG Ageia PhysX Card Review

BFG is one of two companies offering the Ageia PhysX card in form of a retail product. The PPU - physics proccesing unit - is an additioal processor to the GPU and CPU. It enables real life physics and interactivity within supporting games. While the first games and a high price tag upon launch did not live up to expectations, the brand new Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 and a very affordable 120 USD price tag makes this a great addition nowadays.

This isn't a certainty so don't hold your breath, but according to 'sources close to the matter' Microsoft could be set to reveal the second generation of Zune portable media players tomorrow (Tuesday 2nd October). Both Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Design and Development Chief J Allard are expected to attend the event, where the new 3 x 1.25 inch flash-based Zune and a new, thinner hard disk-based Zune will be shown to the public. It is rumoured that the new Zunes will be capable of playing videos and will come equipped with WiFi and more storage than competing devices. Microsoft will be hoping for more success with the new Zune than with the original, which failed to make a huge impact after being hyped up to be a possible iPod-killer.

World in Conflict Pushed Back for Xbox 360

Although the PC version retailed nearly two weeks ago, Sierra Entertainment confirmed today that the Xbox 360 edition of World in Conflict, the award-winning action-strategy game developed by Massive Entertainment, will now ship in 2008. Boot Camp Beta Expires Soon

Apple has issued a warning to Boot Camp users that their beta software is on track to expire this month. The company's latest tech support posting for the software warns: "As indicated in the license agreement for Boot Camp Beta, the Boot Camp Beta program expires when Mac OS 10.5 Leopard becomes available publicly in October, 2007." The note explains that the license to use Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expired on 30 September, requiring users to upgrade to Boot Camp 1.4, which will work a little longer. The Boot Camp 1.4 license is set to expire when Mac OS X 10.5 is made available to the public. Apple has not yet disclosed a date for this release. "To continue using Boot Camp at that time, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard," the company warns. Previous reports have indicated Apple may release a version of Boot Camp for use with Mac OS X 10.4, but the company's existing technical support warning offers no information as to such future plans

Nintendo Predicts Another Wii Shortage

It's been almost a year since the Wii was launched now, and it's fair to say that it's been much more successful than most people originally anticipated. As a result of this, Nintendo has now said that it is expecting another shortage of Wii consoles this Christmas, with President of Nintendo America Fils-Aime saying:
The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on. We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't.
The Wii is currently the most successful of the three new consoles, managing to sell more units than both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, despite Microsoft's machine having a year's head-start.

Adobe Launches Media Player

With the three main firms currently competing in the media playback industry being Microsoft, Apple and Real, Adobe has decided to launch its very own media player in an attempt to gain a foothold. Adobe Media Player (AMP for short), which is backed by several companies including CBS, PBS and Yahoo (as well as a few other online companies), is designed to work with files based on the same .FLV format used by YouTube and several other video sharing sites, with Adobe saying:
Adobe is driving the next generation of internet video delivery with the Adobe Media Player, the Flash Media Server, content protection technologies, and a broad and powerful ecosystem of partners providing key solutions from content creation through delivery and monetization. AMP brings the best of both the broadcast television and web video worlds to your desktop-providing high-quality content both online and offline, with a wide range of business model possibilities.
AMP is still only a BETA at the moment, with a final release scheduled for March 2008, but if you want to take a look at it you can download it for free from here.

Angry iPhone Users Calling for Class Action Lawsuit Over Latest Firmware

IPhone firmware version 1.1.1 did a particularly nasty trick on anyone who had unlocked it via software: it rendered the iPhone unusable on any network other than AT&T in some cases, and in others, it "bricked" them, rendering them useless. Discussions on Apple boards were quickly locked down, and now a community of angry users is planning on suing Apple. The small group did not specify how much they plan on suing Apple for, but chances are, Apple is going to settle out of court.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition Surprisingly Overclockable

When AMD first released the 5000+ version of the Black Edition series of processors, it seemed pretty unimpressive. However, the Black Edition processors are a lot like the old FX processors: they come with an unlocked multiplier, and are hand-picked for overclocking. And so, while the Black Edition processors may not be the best at stock clocks, they certainly are good at overclocking. Just as an example, a Chinese overclocker was able to push his 5000+ Black Edition to a respectable 3.5GHz on stock cooling.

RV670XT Uses 132W, RV670Pro Uses 104W

When gamers heard that the original R600 had a TDP of over 200W, gamers who wanted to play at respectable resolutions and settings went out and bought new power supplies capable of handling such a load, and dealt with the noise that comes with dissipating such a high TDP. Fortunately, these problems are not going to be associated with the RV670, AMD's next high-end graphics card. The RV670XT has a TDP of 132W, and the RV670Pro boasts a modest 104W TDP. Hopefully, these lower heat yields will allow for a quieter cooling solution for these cards. AMD attributes these lower TDPs to a 55nm manufacturing process.

Microsoft Launches Online Office Service

In an attempt to counter the success of Google's online office applications, Microsoft has just launched the beta of its new Office Live Workspace. The service allows users to share, collaborate and comment on Microsoft Office documents such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. However, unlike Google's service, Microsoft requires that users own a copy of Microsoft Office in order to use the service, and users who wish to make changes will have to open their copy of Office and then upload any alterations once complete. The service is compatible with both Office 2003 and 2007 - if you want to take a look you can sign up for free by visiting the Office Live website. Microsoft has also renamed the current Office Live service to Office Live Small Business.

Sony OLED TV Arriving in December

Sony looks set to win the race to become the first company to release an OLED television with its SonyDrive XEL-1 display. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, and such displays do not require a backlight to function, unlike standard LCD displays - as well as boasting superior contrast ratios such as the 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio of the XEL-1. Sony's 11-inch TV will offer a 960 x 540 pixel resolution, a digital tuner, 2 x 1W speakers and HDMI, USB and Ethernet ports. It's dimensions come to 287 x 140 x 253mm, weighing in at 2kg. The XEL-1 will hit be available from 1st December this year with a price tag of about $1,740 - which works at at $160 per inch of OLED. Perhaps a little expensive for the Christmas wish list?

Demonoid Back Online; Blocks North American Users to Avoid Legal Troubles

Last week, Demonoid was down for quite some time, and everyone seemed to think it was due to the Canadian Recording Industry Association. Demonoid is back with a vengeance, and proudly proclaims they were not shut down, rather, they merely had a bit of server trouble. However, to avoid future issues with the CRIA (and possibly the American RIAA), they are prohibiting anyone from North America to access their tracker. ISOHunt.com and it's partners have followed suit, presumably for the same reasons.

Henri Richard: 'Time Was Right' to Resign From AMD

In a recent interview with EWeek, Henri Richard was quoted as saying that leaving AMD any later than he did would have made him look terrible, and would have gotten him a lot of bad press. Richard instead chose to leave AMD while it entered what he thought was a strong Christmas/2008 season. Henri Richard is currently working at a company called Freescale.
